Higher Education Scholarship

Our Lutheran heritage takes education seriously, quite literally “from cradle to grave,” and our church body has long been a leader in pre-school, Sunday Schools, Vacation Bible Schools, grade schools, high schools, higher education (especially through our Concordia University System), and adult Bible Classes and life-long learning.  Martin Luther himself was a professor of theology at the University of Wittenberg. He started teaching there in 1508 as a young instructor. After earning his Doctor of Theology in 1512 (at age 29), he became a full faculty member, and he spent the rest of his career in this position.

Another strong Lutheran accent is that of our “vocation” or calling in life as persons of God among the People of God, serving God and neighbor through the gifts and talents He has given us as unique individuals, including our educational background, to the glory of God and the mission of His Kingdom. The attitudes, knowledge, and skills (both “thinking” and “doing” skills) that come through all levels of education, including an understanding of the human condition in relationship to our Creator throughout history, are a key part of developing those gifts in service to our Lord.

In this tradition, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church makes available a scholarship for members who are pursuing higher education. The current award is $500 for each semester.
