The Fine Print

St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Forestville, WI has been conducting ESL classes to help serve the immigrant farm laborers to southern Door County and northern Kewaunee County. We have found that a meal after classes is beneficial for multiple reasons. First, it removes a barrier to attending class. Second, it facilitates language acquisition, as language is learned relationally. Third, and most importantly, it is an expression of Christian love.

We are seeking groups to help in providing these meals. We recommend groups between 2 and 5 people. More can be overwhelming to the class.

Groups should arrive between 7:15 and 7:30 PM in order to set up. The meal is served at 8:00 PM. We have coffee, plates, flatware, napkins, and cups available on site.

Simple but hearty food is best. Many of the students work long hours in farm labor and have healthy appetites because of this.

Plan to serve about 10 people. However, numbers could be more. It is a good idea to contact Chris or Luis before your service date to get a handle on current numbers of students. When the meal is being eaten, please sit down and eat along with the group! This reinforces the relational nature of what we are trying to accomplish.

Groups enjoy this project. We have found they come away feeling that they have been served as much as they have served.
